SOLO Taxonomy

The SOLO (Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes) taxonomy is “a means of classifying learning outcomes in terms of their complexity, enabling us to assess students’ work in terms of its quality not of how many bits of this and of that they have got right” (Biggs, n.d.). Learning is categorized according to five kinds of understanding:

  1. Pre-structural
  2. Uni-structural
  3. Multi-structural
  4. Relational
  5. Extended abstract
